Redender Stein Mountain
GrundlseeThe Speaking Stone in the Dead Mountains is a distinctive peak with an impressive panorama – and the setting of an ancient legend that gave it its name. A rewarding destination for experienced hikers in the Ausseerland.
The Talking Stone is located at an altitude of 1,900 meters in the western part of the Dead Mountains, near the border between Styria and Upper Austria. The ascent usually starts from the Albert-Appel-Haus, which can be reached in about an hour via marked trails. Surefootedness, fitness, and alpine experience are required for this tour.
The summit rewards with a far-reaching view over the Ausseerland, the Salzkammergut, and the surrounding limestone peaks.
A summit cross and the nearby Henaralm circular trail provide opportunities for rest and further hiking.
The wind whistling through rock crevices makes the stone murmur – thus, it was believed in the past that it spoke. Although linguists trace the name back to “reddening stone” – as the rock glows reddish at sunset – the idea of the “talking stone” has persisted, giving the place a mysterious atmosphere.
In combination with other hiking routes around the Grundlsee, the Talking Stone is a culturally as well as scenically enriching destination for nature-loving guests in the Ausseerland and Styria.
During the summer months in suitable weather.
